Rancon to make Proton SUV in Bangladesh
---For the time being, the company will import and market Proton brand SUV cars. The car will be launched in the country by the end of this year.
According to Rancon Group sources, Proton's X90 series SUV will be imported and
marketed until the car is manufactured in the country. The car will be
officially launched on Thursday. On this occasion, a function was organized at a
hotel in the capital this evening.
According to sources, Proton's X90 series SUVs will be assembled at the Rancon
Group's industrial park in Gazipur. A factory has already been set up. The
Mitsubishi Outlander is currently being assembled at the plant. The assembly of
Proton's SUV will begin in December at the same factory.
The Rancon Group has set up an industrial park in Gazipur, where cars,
motorcycles, trucks, televisions, refrigerators of different brands of the
world are being assembled and manufactured. The company has already invested
over Rs.
Romo Rauf Chowdhury, managing director of Rancon Group, told Prothom Alo, We
have already set up a new factory at our industrial park with an investment of
Tk 300 crore to manufacture personal cars. Mitsubishi Outlander cars are
currently being added. Proton's X90 series of SUVs will start to be assembled
from next December. '
PHP Group has started assembling Malaysia's first Proton brand car in
Bangladesh. They have been assembling and marketing Proton Saga cars in the
country for several years. Now for the first time, the Rancon Group has taken
the initiative to add Proton brand SUVs in the country.
The demand for cars of the world's leading brands has been increasing in the
country for several years. SUVs are known as luxury cars. So it is expected to
hit the market.
According to Chittagong Port and Customs, in 2003, the SUV class of cars in the
country was 8 percent of the total imported cars. In 2022, 40 percent of the
cars imported in the country were in the SUV category. A total of 10,649 SUVs
were imported that year. According to the registration data of Bangladesh Road
Transport Authority (BRTA), 10,240 SUVs were registered in 2022, which is 35
percent more than 2021.
However, due to the US dollar crisis, the import of expensive cars decreased
slightly last year as a result of the Bangladesh Bank's strictness in importing
cars. At the same time, the cost of living is rising and car sales are falling.
This is why 7,765 SUVs were registered with the BRTA last year.
One of the new Proton SUVs is a 6-seater and the other is a 7-seater. Both
engines have a capacity of 1,500cc. Mustafizur Rashid Bhuiyan, director of
Rancon Cars, a unit of Rancon Group, told Prothom Alo, At present, we are
importing Proton's two models of SUVs and launching them in the country. If
these cars start assembling in the country, it will reduce the price by several
lakhs of rupees. '
